Hospitals in South Warwickshire have declared a critical incident due to an ongoing surge in demand for healthcare services.
The South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust reported that its emergency department in Warwick had seen unprecedented attendance levels over the past week, marking some of the busiest days on record.
Patients are being advised to prepare for extended waiting times as clinical staff work diligently to provide care under challenging conditions.
Similar critical incidents have been declared in other regions across the UK, including Birmingham, Liverpool, Plymouth, and Winchester, with hospitals experiencing intense pressure on emergency services.
Trust Statement on the Situation for South Warwickshire Hospitals
In a statement issued on Wednesday, a spokesperson for the Trust emphasised the strain on their services, describing them as “extremely busy.”
“Our clinical teams are doing their utmost to see patients as swiftly as possible. However, due to the current demand, we cannot uphold the usual waiting times. Please be prepared for significant delays and, where feasible, ensure you come prepared for an extended wait,” the spokesperson said.
They urged the public to assist during this period of heightened demand by carefully considering which service they require before seeking treatment. Additionally, those feeling unwell are advised to avoid visiting relatives in hospitals or vulnerable individuals in the community to minimise the risk of spreading illness.
Spike in Flu Cases Across the UK
This announcement coincides with a notable increase in flu-related hospital admissions across the UK. Recent data revealed that at the end of December, 5,000 patients were being treated for flu, a figure nearly 3.5 times higher than the same period in 2023.
